Dr Honey’s silkweed honey has achieved historic success!
In the Back Jar International Honey Contest held in the United States, we competed with our honeys for the first time last year, and our linden honey was included in the 30 most delicious honeys in the world, and it became one of the TOP3 tastest honeys in the variety honey category. This year, we managed to surpass this success, and we not only entered the podium, but we were also able to stand at the highest level, because our silkweed honey was chosen as the “World’s Best Tasting Honey” among various honeys. In addition to all this, a creamed version of our linden honey repeated its podium position last year, this year in the category of creamed honeys.
The Black Jar honey competition was organized for the 12th time this year by the Center for Honeybee Research in Asheville (USA, North Carolina). The origin of the name Black Jar is that all the honey batches that come to the competition are filled in identical jars without labels, which are then placed in a black textile bag during the competition, thus ensuring that the jury members rely only on the taste of the tasted honeys during the evaluation, excluding all other influencing factors.
It is interesting that, like the acacia, the silkweed was brought to Hungary from the United States, but bees cannot collect nectar from it in its original habitat. On the one hand, the plant is almost extinct there, and on the other hand, it lives on clay soil, while here at home the sandy soil of the Great Plain is its main habitat. In the United States, for ecological reasons, efforts are being made to increase the distribution area of silkweed, and wherever it is established, it is protected, because silkweed is the exclusive food plant for the caterpillars of the magnificent monarch butterfly.
